About K.J. Bryant

K.J. BryantLike so many women in their fifties, I’ve been on a journey. Literally! I drove around the United States meeting other midlife women, talking to them about their journeys and learning what it means to live an authentic life. One year, 50,000 miles and seventy wise women later, I am back with amazing stories of transformation for the second half of life.

Before this journey, my dreams seemed way past their expiration date. What had happened to the dream of being a published writer and living a creative and authentic life? Was I too late? I was fifty-six, overweight and stressed to the hilt with a corporate job. Life had gotten in the way. I had become that happy idiot struggling for the legal tender, as Jackson Browne coined in "The Pretender."

And what did I have to show for it? Some good things. Two bright and creative grown-up children, great friends and a beautiful house. And some not so good things. There was more than one failed marriage. Marketing copy filled my computer screen instead of the great American novel. And the mortgaged life I was living felt like a sentence. It wasn’t a bad life. It just wasn’t my life anymore.

Dump the house, kiss the kids, hit the road

I gave myself a gift — a journey. One year on the road with no destination, schedule or demands. I quit my job, sold my home, got rid of most of my possessions, said goodbye to everyone and everything I knew and off I went. Just me and the open road. Would I write that novel? Would I find the satisfaction Mick said we just can’t get?
